Breed History | Golden Retrievers were bred in Scotland in the mid 1800's by one Lord Tweedmouth as a waterfowl hunting dog. After mixing and breeding a few dogs together like the Wavy-Coated Retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniels, Setter and a Bloodhound, Tweedmouth bred a dog that was strong, a great swimmer, hardy enough to withstand the cold weather, able to track wounded game and gentle enough to retrieve waterfowl without hurting them. Originally in England they were seen as a yellow variety of Flat-Coated Retrievers but changed the name to Yellow or Golden Retrievers in 1927. They rose to popularity in the 1970's as the perfect family dog with their sweet and gentle nature, but also some of the most successful guide/assistance dogs as well as search and rescue dogs. |
