Body

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large and sturdy breed with a powerful build. They have a broad, deep chest, a level topline, and a strong, muscular neck that supports their large head. They have medium-sized, almond-shaped eyes that are typically brown and expressive. Their triangular ears are set high on the head and hang close to the cheeks. Bernese Mountain Dogs have a thick, long, and slightly wavy double coat that is usually tricolored with black, white, and rust. They have a bushy tail that curls over the back. Overall, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a well-proportioned and balanced breed with a gentle and friendly expression.

Coat

They have a thick, double coat that is weather-resistant. The outer coat is moderately long, straight, and silky, while the undercoat is dense and woolly. The coat is tricolored, with a base of black and patches of white and rust. Bernese Mountain Dogs require regular grooming to keep their coat healthy and free of mats and tangles. Brushing them at least once a week is recommended, with more frequent grooming during shedding seasons. Baths can be given as needed, but excessive bathing can strip the coat of natural oils. Nail trimming, ear cleaning, and tooth brushing are also important parts of their grooming routine.

diet

Bernese Mountain Dogs are a large breed and require a balanced and nutritious diet that is appropriate for their size and activity level. They are prone to obesity, so it is important to feed them a measured amount of high-quality dog food which can be supplemented with fresh lean meats, fruits and vegetables. Be sure to speak to your vet about what is right for you dogs size, age and activity levels. Fresh water should always be available.

exercise

Berners are a large, active breed that require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. They were originally bred as working dogs in the Swiss Alps, so they have a lot of energy and endurance. Ideally, Bernese Mountain Dogs should get at least 30-60 minutes of exercise each day, which can include walks, hikes, playtime, or other activities that allow them to burn off energy and stimulate their minds. Because of their size and activity level, it's important to start them on a regular exercise routine from a young age to prevent obesity and other health issues.

health

Although overall a healthy breed, Bernese Mountain Dogs are still prone to certain health issues. Some of the most common health problems seen in Bernese Mountain Dogs include hip and elbow dysplasia, cancer, bloat, and progressive retinal atrophy. It is important for owners to maintain regular vet check-ups and ensure their Bernese Mountain Dog is up to date on all necessary vaccinations to keep them healthy.

environment

Berners thrive in environments that provide plenty of space for them to move around and explore. They can adapt to living in a smaller home or apartment, as long as they get enough daily exercise, but they will be most comfortable in a home with a large fenced yard. Due to their thick fur, they do not tolerate hot weather well and should not be kept in an environment that is too warm. Bernese Mountain Dogs enjoy being with their families and thrive in an environment where they receive plenty of attention and affection.

maintenance

They would be considered moderate maintenance as they require daily/weekly grooming and need a moderate amount of exercise to stay healthy. They thrive on human companionship and enjoy having a job to do. They require a high-quality diet and regular vet check-ups as well.

personality

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their friendly and affectionate personalities. They are gentle giants and love to be around people, often seeking out attention and affection from their owners. They are also very loyal and protective, making them great family dogs. They are intelligent and eager to please, which can make training relatively easy, but they can also be stubborn at times.

Family Life

Berners are known to be loyal and affectionate family dogs. They are calm and patient, which makes them good with children. They also get along well with other pets in the household, especially if they are socialized from a young age. Bernese Mountain Dogs have a strong desire to be close to their family members and may develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. They are also known to be protective of their family, which makes them good watchdogs.
