Although there are many stories about where they come from its most likely that during the separate invasions from the Romans and Vikings to England, they brought along their livestock dogs, which eventually bred with each other and created the first "collie". The father of all Border Collies is Old Hemp from 1893, Old Hemp was considered the prefect herding dog and was very much sought after to breed more like him. Border Collies were unique in the fact that instead of nipping and barking at livestock when herding, Border Collies would crouch in a stealth-like way and stare at the livestock in an almost intimidating way to herd them. Border Collies were said the be the world's greatest herders. They grew in popularity and were used all over. To this day, they are a very popular breed, especially used in dog competitions. |
