Breed History

What we now know as standard Schnauzers were bred to be the all-round farm dogs in Germany. Miniature Schnauzers were bred in the late 1800’s from the Standard Schnauzer, Affenpinscher and likely the miniature poodle to breed as a smaller more compact version to aid on farms in ratting (exterminating rats and mice). Due to their ratting history, they fell into the Terrier group although they are the only terrier in the group whose name doesn't distinctly have Terrier in it. After World War 2 their popularity spiked, and they have been climbing the ladder of popular dog breeds ever since. Nowadays they are beloved family dogs with all the personality and love to give.
