5 Pawsome hikes to do with your active furry friend
Are you tired of the same old walks around the block with your furry friend? It’s time to hit the trails and explore some pawsome hikes together! From scenic views to some slightly challenging terrains, we’ve rounded up five of our favorite dog-friendly hikes that will keep both you and your active furry friend happy and healthy.
Grab your hiking boots, pack some water and treats, and get ready for an adventure with your four-legged companion!
Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town
Table Mountain National Park is one of the few pet-friendly national parks in South Africa and is every dog-lovers dream. Whether you pick Table Mountain, Signal Hill, or Lion’s Head, you and your dog are in for a treat. With its tall trees, beautiful fynbos, and spectacular views, it never ceases to amaze us that we are still in the city.
Just remember that areas forming part of the Table Mountain National Park require dog walkers to obtain a Level 1 My Activity Permit. These can be purchased at the Tokai Plantation Office or at certain Cape Town Tourism branches and are only valid for a year.
Silwerfontein Trail, Tulbach
This incredible trail can be hiked in a day, or you can even stay overnight for an extra bit of fun. Be prepared for pine forests, fynbos fields, and let’s not forget those awesome ravines around Ontongskop Peak.
Silwerfontein has a bit of dog history!! Their famous guide dog Kasper used to meet hikers in the morning and was renowned for shepherding them along the trail and apparently would even lead them to safe watering spots!
De Wildt Hiking Trail, Magaliesberg
De Wildt adventure trails are about 30 minutes away from Johannesburg and offer spectacular views of the Magaliesberg mountains and the Hartesbeesport Dam. With incredible rock features and streams, you and your dog definitely won’t regret the day out!
Not all trails are dog friendly, so it’s best to confirm beforehand. Some trails also have dog-size restrictions, which they put down to precarious footing, and as a result, large dogs aren’t allowed on those trails.
Shelter Rock, Magaliesberg
Another dog-friendly Magaliesberg hike you just have to try! This beautiful but challenging hike is named after a huge yellow boulder that can be seen from several kilometers away. Once again, get prepared for amazing rock formations and spectacular views across the vista. On those typical Gauteng crisp, clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of Sun City in the distance.
Umhlanga Lagoon hiking trail, KwaZulu Natal
The Umhlanga Lagoon nature reserve has a great loop trail letting you take in the views of the lagoon from all angles. And the fact that you can do it with your dog is one of life’s simple pleasures.
We love that it is peaceful (well, until our dog spots one of his friends) and scenic. It is great for those dogs who love to run on the sand and finish off with a dip into the lagoon.
Best you pack plenty of old towels to cover the back seat!!
Conclusion
There are always tail-wagging opportunities when it comes to hikes! Besides the spectacular views, there is an abundance of fresh new smells, which, as we know, is the most important aspect when it comes to your dog, asides, of course, from the memories that will stay forever. So boot up, pack the drinks and snacks, and head off into the wild – it’s time to get out of the house and have some fun!
