Properly Cleaning Your Pet’s Toys
Most pet owners have probably never stopped to think that maybe they should be cleaning their pet’s toys! When it comes to our pets, we all know that they will put everything and almost anything in their mouths, and when it comes to their toys it’s by far the most common item! Those things can get really dirty! We need to keep those toys clean, I mean they lick us with those mouths! Just like human babies, our furry babies deserve clean and germ-free toys to ensure a healthy, enjoyable playtime.
Cleaning Pet Toys 101
Be sure to regularly inspect your pet’s toys to see for any damage that could be dangerous for your pets or potential choking hazards. Any sharp pieces, missing parts, loose stitching or holes.
Cleaning Material Toys
For fabric toys such as plushies or teddies, throw them in the washing machine with a mild detergent and a dash of vinegar to help clean and remove any funny smells and wash on a gentle cycle. It’s always a good idea to place them in a pillowcase or laundry bag to protect them while washing! Some material toys might be too delicate to place in the washing machine, so rather handwash those!
Once washed, hang them up to dry completely before giving them back to your pets! If the stuffing is starting to come out though, it’s time for a new one.
Cleaning Hard Plastic Pet Toys
These types of toys can be a breeding ground for bacteria and germs! We highly recommend washing these toys at least once a month! Soak the toys in a solution of equal parts mild soap and warm water for about 10-15 minutes and give them a good scrub! Be sure to rinse thoroughly before giving them back to your pets.
Rotate and Refresh
Your pet can never have enough toys but sometimes it’s best to let the old ones go and just get them some new ones! Rotating them often helps keep your pet engaged and keeps things exciting! We promise your pets won’t complain!
Cleaning Extra Tip
In Summer, a quick and easy way to clean the plastic or rubber toys is to put them in the freezer. The cold temperatures kill off bacteria! Place the toys in a plastic bag and freeze overnight – this gives your pet a clean yet cool experience with their toys!
It’s so important to take the time to properly clean and maintain your pets toys as it contributes so much to their own wellbeing! Not only does it provide a germ- and bacteria-free toy but it can prolong the lifespan of the beloved playthings! A clean toy equals a happy clean pet ready for hours of tail-wagging fun!
