AWS PE was established in 1971 to address the growing challenges faced by the municipality of Port Elizabeth in handling the increasing number of stray animals and cases of cruelty within the city. Our dedicated catteries and kennels provide shelter for stray and surrendered pets, offering them the opportunity to find loving homes through adoption. We have an open-door policy, accepting all animals that are brought to us, and our round-the-clock service ensures that we can promptly respond to reports of cruelty and neglect. In addition, our animal crematorium plays a vital role in reducing landfill costs for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. With a team of 35 staff members, including two full-time inspectors and a qualified veterinarian, as well as the invaluable assistance of volunteers, we strive to fulfill our mission. As a registered Non-Profit Organization, AWS PE adheres to the recommended “Codes of Good Practice for South African Non-profit Organizations” set forth by the Department of Social Development. We conduct regular Executive Committee meetings, maintain audited financial records, hold Annual General Meetings, and proudly maintain our good standing as an NPO.
