Are you planning to hit the open road with your furry friend by your side? Whether it’s for a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, traveling with pets can be both exciting and intimidating. While taking your pet on a road trip requires some extra preparation, hitting the highway together can make for unforgettable experiences and memories.
So if you’re thinking about bringing your four or two-legged companion along for the ride, read on to learn helpful tips and tricks that will ensure a stress-free journey for both you and your furry friend!
Health information
A visit to the vet to get those vaccinations up to date is a great idea; this is especially crucial if you are planning on crossing any borders. Having quick access to your pet’s health info is always handy, as unexpected vet visits are so much easier if you have all your pet’s info on hand. And while you’re at the vet, it’s the perfect time to get your pet microchipped!
While we are on the health trip, remember to pack their medication and supplements, and there are some super cool first aid kits for pets, so make sure to grab one before you go.
Before the trip
First things first, feed your pet at least 4 hours prior to leaving – a car-sick pet definitely doesn’t top the fun list when it comes to those road trips. And if you have an anxious pet traveller, chat with your vet about a travel remedy; it can make all the difference to you and your dog! Getting in some exercise beforehand is a great tip, as we find a tired pet is so much more car-friendly!
Snacks for the road
Just like us, our pets are bound to get thirsty and peckish on the way, especially if it’s a long ride. Packing water, food, and treats are not voluntary, just don’t forget their favorite bowls as well.
Traveling in style
Depending on which pet is traveling with you, it’s a great idea to find the perfect pet carrier or crate for your pet. After all, your pet needs to be comfortable and safe, just like the kids. As tempting as it may be to bring their favorite ball or squeaky toy along for the drive – trust us, after a few hours, you will definitely regret it.
