Adopt A Cat Month
June is Adopt A Cat Month!
As the winter chill wraps South Africa in its frosty embrace, what better way to warm up your home and heart than by adopting a furry feline friend? June is Adopt a Cat Month, a purr-fect time to welcome a new kitty into your life. Whether you’re a seasoned cat lover or a first-time adopter, there’s never been a better time to add some feline joy to your home.
Why Adopt A Cat?
Cats make incredible companions. They’re independent yet affectionate, playful yet serene. Adopting a cat not only brings joy to your life but also gives a deserving animal a second chance. Here are a few reasons why you should consider adopting this June:
- Save a Life: By adopting a cat or kitten from a welfare or rescue, you are giving a homeless cat a chance at a new life, a loving family and a home.
- Health Benefits: Cats are known to reduce stress and anxiety. Their purring even has a calming effect that can even help to lower blood pressure.
- Companionship: Especially during the cold winter months, having a cat to snuggle with can be incredibly comforting!
- Support Animal Welfares: By adopting from animal welfares and rescues you are directly supporting the vital work of the welfare/rescue! By adopting you make it possible for them to take in more animals in need.
Adoption Process
Although the adoption process can seem daunting, welfares & rescues must make sure that each and every animal that is adopted out, is going to a good home. Home checks are often applied to make sure you have the right environment or enough space for the animal to have a happy and fulfilling life. The fee attached to adoption is there to cover the costs of sterilization, medication such as tick & flea treatment and dewormer, vaccinations and often microchipping.
One of the best parts about adopting and getting a new animal is getting everything ready for them to arrive! The best part obviously is the animal itself! Rescues are amazing and so incredibly rewarding! People often opt for kittens, but don’t overlook the adults! Ye might be older but they can be just as playful and loving. Sure, some of them might take a bit longer to warm up to you but it will happen and they will be eternally grateful for a new chance. They are so incredibly deserving of a happy loving home where they can feel safe!
- Have a look around at your local welfares and rescues to see what cats they have available for adoption at the moment. Know if you’re looking for a kitten or an adult.
- Start prepping your home! Cat-proof your home, get the necessary supplies like food, beds, scratch posts, treats, toys and of course, litter!
- When you’re feeling ready, head on over to the welfare or rescue to go me the kitty! And don’t be surprised if more than one catches your eye – they are oh so very cute!
- Once you’ve decided, fill in the adoption forms! Pretty soon you’ll have a new fur-ever friend! Be patient with your new pet, it can take them some time to adjust.
Alternatives to Adopting
If adoption isn’t an option for you right now, there is still much you can do to support your local welfares and rescues.
- Donate: You can donate money, beds, blankets, food, toys, medicine and more! If you’re not sure what to donate, give your local welfare a call and ask what they need!
- Volunteer: Offer your time up for a day or even just a few hours. You can assist with daily operations, and events or even just go to play with the animals.
- Foster: Fostering is a great way to help crowded welfares or assist rescues in temporarily housing adoptable animals. By fostering you help acclimate the animals as well as teach them to play, potty train them and receive all the cuddles!
- Spread the Word: Use social media to raise awareness for welfares and rescues. Share their posts on Facebook and Instagram to help them reach more people.
Adopting a cat is a rewarding experience that brings joy to both you and the animal. This June, open your heart and home to a cat in need from Luna Cat Rescue, Cataholics Kitty Shelter or any other welfare or rescue. Whether you adopt, volunteer, or donate, your support makes a significant difference. Let’s make this winter a little warmer by embracing the magic of cat companionship. Happy Adopt a Cat Month!
